How to Check Your Internet Connection Speed Easily
Though the Internet connection speeds both in terms of download and upload have increased rapidly in the last couple of years, the Internet Service Providers (ISP) still charge you based on your package's connection speed and in some cases the bandwidth quota in GBs. Therefore, it may be nice to know how to check your Internet connection speed from time to time, especially if you feel a slowness while browsing websites.
There are a couple of ways to learn about your effective Internet connection speed, but you should first understand and accept that it will not be the same all the times depending on the time and location you connect and where the site you connected is hosted. Actually, it will be better to say that it is impossible to have a single number that you can say "My internet speed is: ...". This is because, your internet speed will be varying depending on from where you are measuring it and when it is measured. You should also bear in mind that you can't measure your connection speed, unless you establish a connection with a website or a server. The speed also depends on the quality of the server the website that you are connected to is hosted on, i.e. how fast and reliable it is.
For example, you might connect to a website very quickly and download files extremely fast, but on some other sites it might be quite slower. Apart from the page loading speed, the best indicator will be how fast you are downloading a file. Mostly you can see that on the download bar. The below image is from Firefox download window and shows a sample download speed of ~533 KB/sec as a software is being downloaded from Brothersoft.com website.
That speed value is not a constant and it changes continuously as the download proceeds, but it will stabilize around an average number on longer downloads.
As I emphasized above, you won't be able to get a definitive number about your Internet connection speed but you can still have a general idea about it using the following methods I will talk about.
Check Your ISP Website to Learn Your Internet Connection Speed
About a decade ago, ISPs usually did not provide any means for checking your connection speed in real time. But as lots of websites popped up that allow their vistors to do that, ISPs also started to offer tools on their sites to allow their subscribers check their speeds. So, if your ISP has such a speed checking tool on their website, you can directly go to their website and check your speed.
Just in case you would like to get the "opinion" of a third party, you can visit the following sites to have an idea about your speed.
Websites to Check Internet Connection Speed
You can also check your speed on websites which provide free tools for that purpose. Here is a list of sites where you can check your internet connection speed.
Just keep in mind that every site will be using a different server at a different location, therefore the results may be slightly different. I made a test with the sites above and all of them gave me different results.
Below is my recent Speedtest.net result as of writing this post. My download speed varies between 13 Mbps and 14 Mbps and my upload speed varies between 0.6 Mbps and 0.7 Mbps. Note that the effective file download and upload speeds will be much lower than these values, about 1/10 in general.
This concludes my post about how to check your internet speed easily and I hope that you will find this post helpful.
