How to Get Free Extra Storage Space on Dropbox
Dropbox is one of the best file storage sites with an elegant and easy to use interface and lots of features. It is a great place not only to make secure backups of your important files online but also to share and collaborate on project files and documents with your colleagues or project partners.
Though you can't host websites on Dropbox, as it is not a web hosting service, it is a pretty nice choice for file storage, even for some of your unused website files, as a backup or archiving purposes, since most web hosting plans are not truly unlimited when it comes to storage. Besides, uploading files to and downloading files from Dropbox is quite easy as it doesn't require the use of any FTP software or any other third party software other than a plain simple web browser.
Dropbox offers three membership plans, which are Basic (the free option), Pro and Business. You may choose any of them depending on your online storage needs. If you are a casual user with only personal storage needs, and your files won't occupy much space, the 2 GB storage space that comes with the free accounts will be enough in most cases. However, if you are on a budget but you still need some additional storage space, there are a couple of things you can do to increase your free Dropbox account storage beyond the initial 2 GB.
A great thing about Dropbox, which also contributed to its worldwide popularity positively, is that you can increase your account's storage space as a free user, without upgrading your plan to Pro (which offers 1 TB storage) or even paying a dime for it. It is not to say that you shouldn't pay for the Pro or Business plans if you need a lot more storage space but if you can't make that investment now, you can still increase your account space without paying for it.
As it is also explained in a Dropbox support article here, there are basically two things you can do to add extra free space to your account, which I will talk in detail below.
Increase Dropbox Space for Free with Get Started Guide
The Get Started Guide is a mini guide that helps you get accustomed to using Dropbox and also provides you with some extra space once completed. The guide consists of 7 steps and requires you to complete 5 of them to get awarded with the extra 250MB space.
STEP 1: Log in to your Dropbox account: dropbox.com
STEP 2: Visit the following link to open the Get Started Guide:
Note that the above page is accessible only when you are logged in.
STEP 3: As you will also see, the Get Started Guide consists of 7 tasks, which are:
1. Take the Dropbox tour
2. Install Dropbox on your computer
3. Put files in your Dropbox folder
4. Install Dropbox on other computers you use
5. Share a folder with friends or colleagues
6. Invite some friends to join Dropbox
7. Install Dropbox on your mobile device
You need to complete only 5 of these tasks in order to earn the free 250MB space.
STEP 4: Pick 5 of the tasks that you want to complete from the Get Started Guide and complete them to receive your free space reward.
Once you are done, you can enjoy the +250MB added to your account and upload more files.
Increase Dropbox Space for Free by Referring Friends
You can invite any of your friends, family members or coworkers to join Dropbox. Once they create an account and complete a few extra steps, you will earn 500MB free storage space for each referral, up to a total of 16GB for Basic accounts.
To refer a friend, simply follow the steps below:
STEP 1: Log in to your Dropbox account: dropbox.com
STEP 2: Click on your username at the top right corner and then select Settings from the dropdown menu.
STEP 3: On the Settings page, select the Account tab, which displays used and available space information in your account. The Account tab also shows your options for earning some extra space.
STEP 4: In the Earn More Space section of the Account tab, click Invite a friend button to start inviting your friends.
You can use any of the methods for inviting your friends such as directly sending an invitation to their email address, inviting all your Gmail contacts, sharing on Facebook, or using the direct referral link and asking your friends to use it when signing up. For example, here is my Dropbox referral link: https://db.tt/IKEphj64
The more friends you refer to Dropbox, the more space you will earn, up to 16GB, which is quite a lot and may keep you going for a long time before needing to upgrade. Keep in mind that in order to get the free space of 500MB, the person you send the invite must accept the invitation by clicking on your referral link, install the Dropbox desktop app, sign in to the desktop app and verify the email address.
