How to Mute All Sounds in Skype
If you have Skype open while working or while doing something that requires concentration, you may want to get rid of the annoying notification sounds. In this tutorial, I will show you how to mute all the sounds in Skype.
If you are like me, you most probably prefer a perfectly quiet environment while working, especially if the work you are doing requires intense concentration such as coding or writing. I use instant messengers including Skype regularly, especially when I need to communicate with my partners and clients to discuss project details or collaborate on new ideas. They are indispensable tools in today's world. However, when I focus on work, I like to close all my instant messengers and pay my full attention on what I am doing.
I know there are also users who don't mind such distractions like notifications of instant messengers or cell phones while working but still, being able to at least mute them when you need is a great option to have. For example, you may need to keep Skype open and check it from time to time for an expected reply, but you may also want to mute some or all of the notification sounds as you are watching a movie or a stream, or listening to music.
Luckily, apps like Skype give you full control over almost anything and let you decide how you would like to use it during your communications. With Skype, you can adjust the sound settings and specify which notification sounds you want to keep enabled and which ones to keep disabled, as well as muting all the sounds for all events if that is what you would like to do. Below, I will demonstrate how you can do that easily in simple steps.
Mute All Sounds (Notifications) in Skype
Note that depending on the operating system and the Skype version you are using, the following steps may show slight difference but the procedure is more or less the same.
STEP 1: Open Skype and log in to your account.
Sometimes, Skype will ask you to update if a new update is available; update it and let it restart.
STEP 2: Once logged in, you will see the menu at the top. Click on Tools and then select Options....
This will open Skype's Options panel. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + , to open it.
STEP 3: On the left sidebar, click on Sounds under General tab, which will open the section where you can adjust the sound settings.
1 designates the area where you can enable or disable individual notification or event sounds and 2 designates where you can preview sound files, enable/mute all sounds or reset to default settings.
STEP 4: You can either disable each sound one by one by unchecking the tickboxes next to them or by clicking Enable all sounds button, which will then turn into Mute all sounds button that you can click and mute all notification sounds.
If you don't like the default Skype sounds, you can also import your custom sound files to play with calls and notifications etc. using the Import sounds button in the My custom sounds section below.
STEP 5: Once you are done adjusting the sound settings, click the Save button at the bottom. The changes will be in effect immediately, i.e. you won't need to restart Skype.
You can now continue whatever that you are doing, free of Skype distractions. Remember that you can always go back to the options panel and enable any or all the sounds again, whenever you like.
