How to Enable Keyboard Shortcuts in Gmail
You can make use of a number of handy keyboard shortcuts (hotkeys) while you are checking your emails or composing new messages in Gmail. In this post, I will show you how to enable keyboard shortcuts in Gmail so that you can start using them.
Gmail can be counted among the top 3 most popular web based email account providers with Yahoo Mail! and Microsot Outlook. While many email users (including myself) continue to prefer the other two free email services, there is no doubt a large user base who use Gmail as their main email communications tool.
In addition to the general Windows keyboard shortcuts (or any other OS you're using), computer software and websites often have their own set of custom keyboard shortcuts which make the life of their users a lot easier. With the help of those shortcuts, you can do some of the most repetitive tasks more quickly.
It may take a little time to get used to keyboard shortcuts, especially considering apart from the most common hotkeys (e.g., Ctrl + C for copying and Ctrl + V for pasting), all the software applications and websites may have their own unique set of keyboard shortcuts. However, once you get used to them, you will notice an increase in your efficiency while using those programs and web services, and save a lot of time.
For example, by using the following keyboard shortcuts on some frequently visited websites and on some frequently used applications, you can reduce the time you spend on repetitive tasks and focus on more productive activities: Yahoo Mail keyboard shortcuts, Facebook keyboard shortcuts and YouTube keyboard shortcuts as popular websites, and Skype keyboard shortcuts, Firefox keyboard shortcuts and Chrome keyboard shortcuts as popular software applications.
In another post, we made a detailed list of Gmail keyboard shortcuts to give you an idea about the available hotkeys you can use on Gmail on various platforms such as computers and Android. In the next section, we will continue with the steps of enabling Gmail keyboard shortcuts.
How to Activate Keyboard Shortcuts in Gmail
If you are successfully using Gmail keyboard shortcuts, that means they are already turned on and you don't need to do anything else. If any specific hotkey is not working while the others are, it is possible that that hotkey is no longer supported. You can check this support page for an up-to-date list of keyboard shortcuts for Gmail.
STEP 1: Log in to your Gmail account: mail.google.com
Once you log in, you will be sent to the Inbox screen.
STEP 2: At the top right corner of the Inbox screen, below your profile icon, you will see the Settings button, click it.
This will display a dropdown menu with a number of options including display density, settings, themes and help.
STEP 3: Click Settings link to open the Gmail Settings page.
On the Settings page, make sure that the General tab is selected.
STEP 4: Scroll down on the General settings tab until you see the Keyboard shortcuts entry, and select Keyboard shortcuts on radio button.
STEP 5: Go to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes button. This step is easy to miss, so make sure that you save the changes you made.
That's all. From now on, the keyboard shortcuts will be functioning on Gmail and you can start using them while viewing and organizing your conversations, reading and writing emails.
If you ever need to disable them, simply go to the same section and select Keyboard shortcuts off radio button and hit the save button.
